Braves Series Recap 5/1/2023

Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets

Game 1: Braves 4 Mets 0 (F5)

Game 2: Braves 9 Mets 8

Game 3: Braves 3 Mets 5

Summary: On a rainy New York night, the Braves beat the Mets 4 to 0. in rain shortened game. Max Fried pitched 5 shutout innings resulting in a weird complete game. The Braves scored 4 runs in the top of the fifth behind Acuna single and a 3 run home run from Matt Olson. MLB really needed the braves to get this game in as the weather looked really bad for Saturday and Sunday. One game of this series was pushed to August while the other two were played in a doubleheader summarized below..

In the first game of the double header the Braves held on to beat the Mets 9 to 8. Spencer Strider had his first shaky start of the season as he got beat around a little bit pitching 5 innings allowing 4 earned runs. Spencer had trouble with his control on a windy day and walked 3 and hit two batters. Strider’s streak of starts with 9+ strikeouts also ended at 9 starts. He only struck out 8. The braves offense was powered by Acuna, Murphy, and Pillar. Each had at least one homerun with Murphy hitting two. Acuna hit a ball all the way back to Atlanta and Murphy continues his hot hitting. The Mets did a bullpen game and it was not effective at all. Their offense was powered behind home runs from Pete Alonso, Brett Baty (rookie), and Eduardo Escobar. Each time the Braves would go up by a few runs, the Mets would fight back but couldn’t quite get over the hump.

The second game of the double header was the opposite of the first as the Mets won 5 to 3. The Mets scrapped across 2 runs in the first five innings off of Charlie Morton and the Braves were able to capitalize on a Eddie Rosario triple in the top of the 6th and took a 3-2 lead. Morton got into some trouble in the bottom half of the inning coming out with 1 out and runners on first and second. Michael Tonkin immediately gives up a double and the Mets never relinquish the lead adding a run on a solo home run by Jeff McNeil in the 8th. The Braves bullpen really struggled this series and has been quietly struggling for a week or so now. Acuna was hit by a pitch in the shoulder in the top of the first and came out of the game with a shoulder contusion.

Key Performers:

Pete Alonso (2 for 6, 1 HR, 3 RBI), Alonso continued his power surge as hit another home run and is tied for the league lead with 11 home runs so far.

Brett Batty (4 for 11, 1 HR, 2 R, 1 RBI), Batty, a rookie, performed well against the Braves as he added his first homer of the season off of Strider.

Tylor Megill (5.1 IP, 3 ER, 4 K’s 3 BB), Megill was the best pitcher of the series for the Mets which isn’t saying much, but he cruised through 5 innings allowing no earned runs in game 3. He got in trouble in the 5th and was taken out and the bullpen gave up a 3 run triple but all three runners on base were attributed to him.

Ronald Acuna Jr. (4 for 8, 4 runs, 1 HR, 2 RBI). Acuna continues his hot streak and starting hitting for some power with 1 home run and a double. He came out of the game 3 with a shoulder contusion.

Sean Murphy (4 for 9, 3 runs, 2 HR, 6 RBI). Murphy continues his torrid hitting with 2 home runs in game 2 of the series.

Max Fried (5 IP, 0 ER, 7 K’s, 1BB). Fried looked great as he cruised through 5 innings of ball until the game was called for rain in the top of the 6th. He looked to be well on his way to 7 innings until the rain became too heavy to continue.
