Braves Recap – 4/23/2023

Houston Astros vs. Atlanta Braves

Game 1: Astros 6 Braves 4

Game 2: Astros 6 Braves 3

Game 3: Astros 5 Braves 2

Summary: In game 1, the braves got another great start from Bryce Elder but the bullpen erased all the good work by Elder. Jesse Chavez didn’t have his normal stuff and gave up the lead in 7th. Astros slugger, Yordan Alvarez, hit a two run home run off a hanging slider by AJ Minter in the top of the 9th to take a 6-4 lead. Ryan Pressley went 3 up 3 down in the ninth to earn his first save of the year. Kudos to the Stros pen and Hunter Brown who allowed 4 runs in the first but held the braves scoreless the rest of the game.

The Braves dropped their third straight game on Saturday with a 6 to 3 loss to the Astros. Sean Murphy hit a home run to take a one run lease in the 4th but Kyle Wright gave up 3 earned runs in the Top of the 6th and the Astros never looked back behind a great pitching performance from Framber Valdes (7IP, 3ER, 9K’s). The Braves scored two more in the bottom of the 7th on a 2 run shot from Ozzie Albies, who had a great series. The bullpen couldn’t keep the Astros at bay as they scored one run in the 8th and 9th respectively to end the game.

What a disappointing weekend at Truist for the Braves as they dropped their 4th straight game by getting swept by the Astros. One again, the bats were quiet, but the braves held a 2-0 lead in 8th when a combination of Nick Anderson and AJ Minter give up 2 runs on a “tell me if you’ve heard this before” YORDAN ALVAREZ two run single. Minter comes back out in the 9th and promptly gives up 3 more earned runs. The braves threaten in the 9th, but Eddie Rosario grounds into a double play to kill the rally and the braves lose 5-2.

Key Performers:

Yordan Alvarez (3 for 14, 2 HR, 6 RBI), while this doesn’t look like a key performer, his three hits came in the most crucial points in the game. 2 run HR on Friday to take a 6-4 lead, 2 run HR on Saturday to take a 2-1 lead, and a two run single on Sunday to tie the game.

Alex Bregman (4 for 11, 4 BB, 3 RBI). Bregman was consistent in against the braves with 4 hits and 3 RBI’s.

Christian Javier (6 IP, 1 ER, 10 K’s 2 BB) Valdez put on a show Sunday only allowing 1 earned run on a HR from Kevin Pillar and at one point had struck out 7 batters in row.

Ronald Acuna Jr. (5 for 12, 2 runs, 3 2B’s, 4 SB’s). Acuna continues his hot streak as he got 5 hits and 4 SB’s. If only the hitters in front of him could also get on base.

Ozzie Albies (3 for 10, 1 HR, 4 RBI’s). Ozzie is trying to break out his slump as he continues to pound left handed pitching.

Max Fried (6.2 IP, 0 ER, 6 K’s, 3BB). Fried looked like his late last season self on Sunday as he cruised through 6 innings of ball. He got into some trouble in the 6th due to his walks but the bullpen was able to pick him up. This was only his third start of the season after a hamstring injury but he is looking close to mid-season form in a contract year.
